"Those of you who know me, know I would go the extra mile........ extra thousand miles........... for any one of you.
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of
the one or the few.
Thanks so much for all the extra help now and in the future, I will beat this thing for
my wife and children and the thousands of friends. Thanks so much for showing us such support through our time of need."
Darrel Oake - Darrell Oake is a freelance photographer who is well known in the communities of Bedford, Sackville, Halifax, Dartmouth and beyond.
Darrell worked at the Halifax Daily News for many years. Over the years, Darrell has made his living supporting his wife, a stay at home Mom and their four children, aged 16, 14, 12, and 9, working as a freelance photographer, for companies including Transcontinental's The Halifax Weekly News, The Bedford-Sackville Weekly News and the Dartmouth-Cole Harbour Weekly News network.
In early November, Darrell began to feel weak, and was experiencing numbness in his feet, legs, arms and face. He was admitted to Dartmouth General Hospital on Nov. 7, and on Nov. 24, Darrell was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a rare disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. As a self-employed free-lance photographer, Darrell does not have any health benefits or sick pay. The money he makes as a freelance photographer is the family's only real income.
Those of us that know and love Darrell fear the loss of this income will leave the family with great hardship, terrible at any time of year but especially tragic during the Christmas Holidays. We are seeking any help you could provide. As it stands now, there is hope Darrell will be able to leave the hospital by mid-December, but will require much follow-up treatment during his recovery.

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a serious disorder that occurs when the body's defense (immune) system mistakenly attacks part of the nervous system. This leads to nerve inflammation that causes muscle weakness.
Guillain-Barre syndrome is an autoimmune disorder (the body's immune system attacks itself). Exactly what triggers Guillain-Barre syndrome is unknown.
Guillain-Barre syndrome damages parts of nerves. This nerve damage causes tingling, muscle weakness, and paralysis. Guillain-Barre syndrome most often affects the nerve's covering (myelin sheath). Such damage is called demyelination, and it causes nerve signals to move more slowly. Damage to other parts of the nerve can cause the nerve to stop working altogether.
